We Salute: Great Figures in Black History was Gallery 400 ’s inaugural exhibition in honor of Black History Month. The exhibition showcased We Salute, a series of portraits created by Chicago-based muralist Eugene Eda for the Du Sable Museum of African American History. The exhibition also featured 19 paintings by African American artists of the time done for an exhibit titled Illinois Negro History Makers, which was originally shown at McCormick Place in 1963. The works were prepared for the Illinois Emancipation Centennial Commission and depicted events and people that touched on the Black experience throughout Illinois ’ history from the 1700s to the early 1960s.
