Sam Durant (born 1961) takes a critical view on social, political, and cultural tropes and icons in his artwork. Often referencing American history, he explores the varying relationships between popular culture and fine art. Engaging subjects as diverse as the civil rights movement, southern rock music, and modernist architecture, he reproduces familiar visual and aural signs, arranging them into new conceptually layered installations.

Durant received a BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art and an MFA from California Institute of the Arts.
