Robert Bordo (born 1949) begins his nearly abstract paintings with imagery derived from pre-existing two-dimensional forms. Maps, charts, and envelopes have been the inspiration for his paintings. In his latest works, the starting point is arrangements of invented landscape postcards. The scale of the works is traditional easel painting and the surfaces are slowly and beautifully built of oil and medium. The paintings tend to have a single dominant color with the landscape subtly emerging from the ground. There is a range of paint handling from the more gestural to the refined.

Bordo has exhibited at Alexander and Bonin, New York; Brooke Alexander, New York; Tibor de Nagy Gallery, New York; Mira Godard Gallery, Toronto; and Concordia Art Gallery, Montreal. He has made several theatre commissions, for groups including the Mark Morris Dance Group,  Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, and the Monnaie Dance Group. Last year he was awarded a Tesuque Foundation Fellowship and he currently teaches at the Cooper Union School of Art. He received a BA from McGill University and an MFA from New York Studio School.
