The work of Phil Berkman (born 1946) has been viewed by Chicagoans for over two decades. As one of Chicago’s pioneer conceptual artists he is best known as a performance artist but also successfully manages to investigate the realm of the sculptural object. His work explores a balance between private, social, and cultural issues. In his most recent exhibition at N.A.M.E., where he was a founding member some twenty years ago, he combined performance qualities with more traditional sculptural concerns, inviting the audience to physically interact with some of the work.

He has shown in Chicago at Tough Gallery, Randolph Street Gallery, Artemesia Gallery, Mike’s Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art; nationally, he has exhibited at the San Francisco Art Institute and Hallwalls, Buffalo.
