Karl Wirsum (born 1939) has long been considered one of the major forces of the Chicago Imagists, which took hold as an internationally recognized group in the 1960s. Among his peers are Roger Brown, Gladys Nilsson, Art Green, Ed Paschke, and Jim Nutt. High art and popular imagery are intermingled with references to comic books, toys, persian miniatures, outsider art, and portraiture. His work is currently on view in Art in Chicago 1945 1995 at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, and he has two works in a group show at the Phyllis Kind Gallery, where he is represented. Wirsum teaches at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
