Painter John Phillips (born 1953) started out as a geometric abstractionist, but has recently shifted to a more playful and open manner, both abstract and representational, self-referential without being self-absorbed. His work has been shown in solo exhibitions throughout Chicago at Barbara Balkin Gallery, One Illinois Center, Marianne Deson Gallery, Dart Gallery, the University Club, and N.A.M.E. He has also been included in numerous group shows across the United States. Phillips was a fellow in the Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program, New York; he was the recipient of an Illinois Arts Council Grant; and he was a Visual Artist Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.

He earned a BFA from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
