Jeff Wall (born 1946) is a visiting artist at the College of Architecture and the Arts in Spring 2001. Trained as an art historian, the Vancouver-based artist has been creating an expansive series of backlit photographic transparencies of staged scenes for over twenty-five years. In his combination of staged resonant moments and advertising display methods, Wall investigates realism and photographic and cinematic structures, linking them to the dynamics of looking at images.

He has exhibited his work in solo museum shows at Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume, Paris; Art Tower Mito, Japan; and Mus e d’art contemporain de Montr al, Canada; among many others; and in major group shows such as Documenta X, Kassel and the XXIV Biennial, S o Paulo. Wall has taught at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, Halifax; Simon Fraser University, British Columbia; and also at the University of British Columbia, where he received an MA.
