Ellen Rothenberg (born 1949) has developed a body of work that addresses a large public audience outside the traditional contexts of art institutions. This work has included public performances, installations, and interactive audience pieces. Rothenberg has presented her work in diverse venues ranging from city squares, lobbies of public buildings, storefront windows, train stations, to a state correctional facility. She has recently held solo exhibitions at the Portland Museum of Art, Oregon; Tufts University Art Gallery, Massachusetts; the University Art Museum, University of California, Santa Barbara; and the Kent Gallery, New York.

Rothenberg is currently teaching performance and installation art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is involved in the Sculpture Chicago project during the summer of 1996.
