Led by ecologist Nance Klehm, Urbanforages are two hour informally guided walks through the spontaneous and cultivated vegetation of the urbanscape. Along the walk, participants learn to identify plants, hear their botanical histories and stories of their cultural use by animals and humans, and share anecdotes of specific experiences with these plants. All Urbanforages start with an herbal beverage and end with a simple herbal food shared over discussion of the experiences and questions generated by the walk.

The Ubanforage will meet outside of Gallery 400, at 400 S. Peoria St.

Be prepared for walking and the elements. Attendees are encouraged to bring a notebook to jot down notes and a bag for collecting plant material.

This Land/That Land: Discussions About Political Ecology and Place is a program series supported by the Humanities Without Walls consortium, based at the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The Humanities Without Walls consortium is funded by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The series precedes the exhibition The Earth Will Not Abide, on view at Gallery 400 in the spring of 2017.
