Public Hearing presents a conversation on the uses and usefulness of critical theory for the practicing artist featuring artists Betsy Odom, Irena Knezevic, Dan Gunn, and Andreas Fischer. The program will be moderated by Claudine Ise and Philip von Zweck.

Betsy Odom is a Chicago based artist whose work explores the cultural information embedded within materials and craft. Her work has been exhibited in group and solo exhibitions both nationally and internationally, including exhibitions at Field Projects, Brooklyn; threewalls, Chicago; and Amel Bourorina Gallery, Berlin. Her work was recently added to the West Collection through the 2012 Acquisition Prize. Odom received a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and an MFA from Yale University.

Irena Knezevic is a Serbian artist working in various visual art formats, music, and architecture. She has performed and exhibited her work in solo projects at Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; threewalls, Chicago; White Columns, New York; Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University, Cambridge, MA; Jan Van Eyck Academie, the Netherlands; and University Galleries of Illinois State University, Normal. Knezevic has collaborated on projects at Blum and Poe, Los Angeles; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Dallas Biennial, TX; and Control Room, Los Angeles. Her writings and projects have been published in Cabinet magazine; Shoppinghour magazine; and in Blast Counterblast, published by Mercer Union and WhiteWalls. She is currently an assistant professor at the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts at Washington University in St Louis, MO. Knezevic received an MFA at University of Illinois at Chicago.

Dan Gunn is an artist, writer, and educator based in Chicago. Gunn has exhibited his work in a solo exhibition at moniquemeloche, Chicago. Gunn’s work has been included in Multistable Picture Fable at Lloyd Dobler Gallery, Chicago; the Contemporary Art Council s group exhibition New Icon 12 x 12 at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. Gunn also writes about local Chicago art, including the history of alternative and apartment spaces, in conjunction with the Hyde Park Art Center s Artists Run Chicago exhibition. He is a contributor for the Bad at Sports podcast and has published articles for the DePaul Art Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Newcity, Proximity Magazine s (con)Temporary Art Guide and ArtSlant.com. Gunn received an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Andreas Fischer is a painter based in Chicago. His numerous projects include exhibitions at Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Mattress Factory Museum, Pittsburgh; Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago; Gahlberg Gallery at the College of DuPage, Glen Ellyn, IL; Rockford Art Museum, Rockford, IL; Hudson Franklin Gallery, New York; Kavi Gupta Gallery, Chicago; and Andrew Rafacz Gallery, Chicago, among others. Fischer was awarded an Artadia artist grant in 2004. He is currently a visiting assistant professor of studio art at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Fischer received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, an MFA and an MA in Art History from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
