Led by artist and activist Saleem Hue Penny, this writing workshop will explore the ways different environments change the art-making process. Inspired by the handmade and playful ethos of our current exhibition Don’t mind if I do, Participants will observe and explore objects as entry points to themes ranging from equity, isolation, & access, to Crip Time, rewilding, & remixing. The group will engage with a diverse library of print materials, co-create aspirational statements, and leave with a one-of-a-kind multi-sensory zine. Whether you write every day or once a year, all are welcome! This workshop is for anyone interested in developing their writing practice and learning.

ABOUT

Saleem Hue Penny (him/friend) is a Black, disabled, “rural hip-hop blues” poet who punctuates his hybrid/mixed media work with drum loops, Jim Crow artifacts, and birch bark.  Penny’s art and advocacy are inseparable. He is a proud Cave Canem Fellow, 2024 Disability Futures Fellow, and a member of the O|Sessions Black Listening cohort. He edits at Bellevue Literary Review, was a 2021 Poetry Coalition Fellow, and is a worker-owner of Cooperation Racine, L.W.C.A in Englewood, Chicago.
