Bryan Schutmaat (Born 1983) is from Houston and is now based out of Brooklyn, NY. Schutmaat s project, Grays The Mountain Sends, combines portraits, landscapes, and still lifes in a series of photos that explore the lives of working people residing in small mountain towns and mining communities in the American West. Equipped with a large format view camera, and inspired by the poetry of Richard Hugo, Schutmaat aims to hint at narratives and relay the experiences of strangers met in settings that spur his own emotions.

Schutmaat s photographs have been exhibited at CENTER, Santa Fe; Photographic Resource Center, Boston University; and Houston Center for Photography. He has been awarded the 2013 Flash Forward Emerging Photographer Award, first place at CENTER s 2013 Gallerist Choice Awards, the 2013 Aperture Portfolio Prize, and first place at the 2013 Daylight Photo Awards. Schutmaat completed a BA in history at the University of Houston and received an MFA in photography from the Hartford Art School in Connecticut in 2012. </
