Painter David Cabrera (born 1956) creates a tension between heavy political subject matter and childish execution in his neo-Conceptual and mannered Minimalist work, formally rooted, reflective and critical, and dealing with the formal characteristics of minimal art. Its appearance is used as a false identifying mark of essentially very personal and traditional art. “I’m not interested in minimalism; I have no Minimalist heroes. It’s just a fast way for me to make work. Art is one area where I don’t have to be perfect, where I’ve given myself permission to make mistakes,” Cabrera has said.

He has exhibited at 303 Gallery, New York; Richard Kuhlenschmidt Gallery, Los Angeles; Galerie Bruges La Morte, Bruges, Belgium; Hallwalls, Buffalo, New York; and is about to have his first exhibition in Chicago at the Robbin Lockett Gallery. Cabrera earned a BFA and an MFA from the California Institute of the Art.
