Dotty Attie (born 1938) is best known for her voyeuristic reproductions of Old Masters presented with accompanying text. Based on the works of painters such as Caravaggio, Courbet, Eakins, and Ingres, the multi-panel paintings explore the depictions of the body in the history of art. Through copying, cutting, and re-contextualizing masterpieces, Attie manipulates classic images of women to accentuate their vulnerability to the powerful male and his gaze. Text interspersed throughout accentuate divisions and create a narrative previously unimagined. Attie has exhibited at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington D.C.; CDS Gallery, New York; Carlo LaMagna Gallery, New York; MoMA PS1, New York; Phoenix Gallery, New York; Museo Rufino Tamayo, Mexico City; Vanderwoude Tannanbaum Gallery, New York; Terry Dintenfass Gallery, New York; Berkshire Museum, Pittsfield; University of Virginia, Charlottesville; QCC Art Gallery, New York; Katherine Markel Gallery, New York; University of California, Los Angeles; Nexus Gallery, Philadelphia; American Academy of Arts and Letters, New York; and the Renaissance Society, Chicago. She received a BFA from Philadelphia College of Art.
