Empathy is an invention. What now seems a basic quality of human feeling is a word fabricated in 1909. Through a reading of the early ’70s work of performance artist and film maker Yvonne Rainer, Carrie Lambert will propose a theory of empathy as the ethical engine of advanced art. Lambert teaches modern and American art history at Northwestern University. Her work focuses on art of the 1960s and 1970s, especially performance and video, and has appeared in October, Trans, Visual Resources, and Documents. She was the managing editor of October magazine and a critical studies fellow in the Whitney Museum’s Independent Study Program.
