The artist Raffael Rheinsberg (born 1943) creates art by collecting abandoned items and using them in installations. He was once apprehended while procuring his found objects, which caused him to proclaim: “An artist must also be a criminal!” Curator and lecturer Norbert Weber discusses the work of Rheinsberg in the public domain. Rheinsberg’s recent works in public spaces have included commissions from Tallin, Estonia; Reims, France; Riga, Latvia; Recklinghausen, Germany; and Kiel, Germany. He has had major exhibitions at prestigious museums and galleries, such as the Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin. Writing for Art in America, Ulf Erdmann Ziegler claimed, “Raffael Rheinsberg’s sculptural installations present an archeology of twentieth-century labor.”
