In 1994, artist, curator, writer, and professor Barbara DeGenevieve was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Visual Artists Fellowship, which was eventually revoked by the National Council on the Arts because of the sexual content of her work. In this month’s New Art Examiner, there is an interview with DeGenevieve by Bill Gaskin regarding the council’s decision. She first received a NEA Fellowship in 1988, having also been awarded an Illinois Arts Council Artists Fellowship and a William and Flora Hewlett Summer International research grant to study gender representation in European photography in 1987.

DeGenevieve lectures widely on her work as well as topics including sexuality and gender representation, censorship, and artists’ responsibility. She is currently teaching at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the photography program and has also taught at the University of New Mexico, the University of Illinois, the Art Institute of San Francisco, California College of Arts and Crafts, and California State University. Her exhibition My Words In Your Mouth is currently on view at the Ezell Gallery, Chicago.
