This is the inaugural edition of Talking Cure a four part series initiated by Tony Tasset, sculptor and University of Illinois at Chicago professor, in collaboration with Lorelei Stewart, Director of Gallery 400, and Anthony Elms, Assistant Director of Gallery 400.
Talking Cure brings together University of Illinois at Chicago individuals, as well as guests and friends from the city, for informal discussions on topics in visual art be they current issues, stereotypes, archetypes, common misconceptions, hard facts, or all of the above.
For this first outing, we go all the way back and start at the beginning: the artist as tormented soul. This is undoubtedly the most cherished and hated notion of an artist and his or her practice. Is this a role that is too fun not to play? A kernel of truth? Reflective of the types who currently enroll in art schools? A useful crutch to explain just not getting the work done? Or an easily-used media image? All paper tigers are welcome at the table.
