With a career spanning fifty years, Nancy Spero (born 1926) was part of the Chicago Imagists. With husband painter Leon Golub, the “Monster Roster” was known for grotesque and surreal works in the 1960s.  Her work is an unapologetic statement against the pervasive abuse of power, Western privilege, and male dominance. According to the New Art Examiner ‘Nancy Spero’s art refuses easy classification. Simultaneously sensual and conceptual, at times spouting rage and at other moments dancing in celebration…[her] work demands yet another redefinition of the elusive term ‘feminist art’.”

Spero co-founded AIR, an all women’s cooperative gallery in New York and has exhibited extensively around the world, with traveling retrospectives organized by the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London in 1972; and the Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, New York in 1987. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Allen Art Museum, Oberlin, Ohio; Art Institute of Chicago; Brooklyn Museum, New York; Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; Portland Art Museum; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Tate Gallery, London; Mus e des beaux-arts de Montreal; The Museum of Fine Arts, Hanoi, Vietnam; and Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. She received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
