Lauren Rademaker earned an Honorable Mention from AIA Chicago's Chicago Award in Architecture
We're thrilled to share UIC School of Architecture's undergraduate student Lauren Rademaker earned an Honorable Mention from AIA Chicago's Chicago Award in Architecture for her creative project, "Birds, Baths, and Beaches." The project was part of the fall 2023 Arch 465 "A Bigger Splash" studio taught by Clinical Assistant Professor Barbara Materia.
The Swimming Pool project was conceived as an openly accessible leisure infrastructure along Chicago’s lakefront. The studio's design proposals examined the physical context with a thorough understanding of the current landscape condition and the vulnerability of the waterfront due to climate change. Chicago’s 28-mile Lake Michigan shoreline has been naturally altered over centuries and heavily manufactured in the past decades, endangering its morphology and natural features by erosion and water level rise, which are still happening today. The studio intended to deepen the relationship between the spatial organization and landscape, architecture, and bodies, program flexibility and transformability, and inclusivity and accessibility.
