Invitations for the spring 2018 Commencement will be mailed in April. It will be necessary to confirm your attendance. 

 

COMMENCEMENT GUIDELINES AND PROTOCOL


The College of Architecture, Design, and the Arts graduation is a formal ceremony. All students participating in Commencement must purchase a cap and gown in advance of the ceremony. For details about ordering your cap and gown please visit the UIC Commencement website at http://commencement.uic.edu/student_caps_gowns.shtml. Graduate students only, when you arrive at the Pavilion please have tassels on the left and your hoods unbuttoned and draped over your arm. You will be hooded on stage during the ceremony.

On the day of the ceremony all students are asked to arrive at the UIC Pavilion, Gate 2 no later than 6:30 p.m. Name cards and seat assignments will be distributed at that time. Seats are assigned by degree and in alphabetical order by last name.  

The Readers at graduation attempt to pronounce each graduate’s name correctly. If you wish to indicate correct pronunciation of your name for the Reader, please provide your name, degree, telephone number, and a phonetic spelling of your name on an index card to the Office of Student Affairs, 208 Jefferson Hall, no later than March 1st. Undergraduate and graduate degree students are individually recognized as degrees are conferred. 

Graduates are to remain in their assigned seats and stay for the entire ceremony, approximately two hours.

All graduates will receive a proxy diploma at the graduation ceremony. Official diplomas will be mailed to the home address of graduates approximately three months after graduation. Diplomas will be issued only after all academic obligations have been met.

A photographer will take individual photos as the diploma is presented to each graduate. Photos from the ceremony will be available for viewing and purchase online. 

Videos of the ceremony will also be available for viewing and purchase online.

There are no tickets for the graduation ceremony. Guest seating at graduation is on a first-come, first-served basis.  It is recommended that guests arrive early for the best seating. The UIC Pavilion doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

Parking will be available in the lots near the UIC Pavilion.

UIC Pavilion Policy for the Mandatory Use of Metal Detectors
The use of metal detectors is required for any event held at the UIC Pavilion or UIC Dorin Forum which meet the any one of following criteria:

A. The event is organized by an entity not affiliated with UIC;
B. The organizers anticipate 400 or more persons will attend, or the UIC Venues & Events, in their sole discretion, believe there is a substantial likelihood that 400 or more persons will attend;
C. Open to non-UIC students, faculty or staff;
D. Alcohol will be served, there is a live band or other form of musical entertainment, or event has special circumstances, as determined by UIC Venues & Events.

All events where metal detectors will be utilized must notify attendees in advance. Persons entering metal detectors will only be required to remove their phones, keys, coins, wallets, etc. from their pockets.

If a person sets off alarm, they must return to the metal detector entrance, remove all items from pockets and enter again. If they again set off alarm, they will be scanned by a hand held wand. After wanding if detectors still activate, patron will not be permitted to enter the venue.

 

UIC Pavilions Policy for the Bags, Purses and Backpacks: For safety reasons, bags, purses, backpacks and other large bags may not be permitted in the UIC Pavilion or UIC Dorin Forum.

This policy will be in effect for all events except:

  • UIC Dorin Forum events that are only open to UIC Employees
  • Events where materials necessary for the event are contained in the bags (ie. Job fairs, exhibitions, etc.)

Prohibited bags include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Purses, bags or containers larger than 12” x 6” x 12”
  • Camera bags
  • Cinch bags/drawstring bags
  • Briefcases
  • Computer bags
  • Backpacks
  • Coolers (including thermos)
  • Fanny packs
  • Luggage of any kind
  • Diaper bags

Patrons may bring in the following bags:

  • Clear plastic, vinyl or PVC that do not exceed 12” x 6” x 12”. Bags may be hand carried or have a shoulder strap.
  • One gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Ziploc).

An exception will be made for medical necessary items after proper inspection at the entrance.

All bags that are allowed in the facility will be searched.
